Blessing Box Ministry

If you'd like to see the Body of Christ in action, visit the church any weekday morning for an hour or so and watch the traffic that comes to our doors. Each caller is greeted warmly, given the food or hygiene items they request, and sent away with a "...have a blessed day." Over and over, day after day. We hand out hundreds of bags each month.

Our own Holy Comforter saints, Katye Keyes and Wendy Jackson, see that the snack bags and hygiene bags are packed and ready to hand out, and our church secretary, Cathy Bohannon is often the cheerful voice that greets those in need. What started with the beautiful blessing box given by the Eubanks family several years ago has grown into a wonderful presence of Christ's love to the less fortunate in our community. People stock the actual blessing box with socks, hats, water bottles, snacks, etc. which are quickly picked up by needy folks passing by. We quickly saw that the box itself couldn't meet all the needs, so in addition to it, we now hand out snack and hygiene bags from our lobby doors during business hours Monday - Thursday.

Many parishioners support this ministry by purchasing single-serving food items (think Vienna sausages, tuna packets, cheese crackers, bottled water, fruit or gelatin cups, etc.). Some bring the actual food to church; others order from Walmart and have food delivered or provide funds for the church to use to purchase items as needed. There is ALWAYS a greater demand than supply. If you want to help, pick up some extra items when you're grocery shopping and remember most of these people don't have a way to cook or refrigerate foods, and don't have plates or utensils either.

Seeing what this simple ministry is doing is one of the best ways for you to feel good about this parish. We ARE helping people every day. For some, it's the only help they receive, the only friendly words they hear. It's a lesson we have learned -- our Blessing Box blesses those who receive, but it also greatly blesses all those who give.

Choir

One of the most visible (and audible) ministries at Holy Comforter is our Choir. This group leads the congregation in singing at almost every worship service. Led by our super-talented Organist and Choir Director, Cheryl Moorer, the choir works hard to enrich our worship with beautiful music throughout the year. Perhaps the highlight of their year comes with the annual Lessons & Carols Service, normally held on the second Sunday of Advent. There is always a place in the choir for anyone who wishes to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord." Knowledge of music is desirable, but not absolutely necessary. Maybe you don't picture yourself as a soloist -- there's still a place in the choir for anyone who wants to add their voice to worship. Don't worry that you're not good enough, just try it. If you are interested in being a part of our Choir, please contact Cheryl Moorer or any choir member for more information.
